PROGRAMME

Conference registration desk will be opened on Thursday, August 22nd at 12 am - 10 pm and on Friday, August 23rd at 8 am - 5 pm at the University of Tartu Main Building, Ülikooli Street 18. Early arrivals are invited to get together at 7 pm on Thursday night at Villa Tammekann (University of Turku Granö Centre), Kreutzwaldi Street 6, for a glass of wine and a meal.

Opening ceremony and the first plenary will take place at the Aula Magna of the University of Tartu (Main Building, Ülikooli Street 18) on Friday, August 23rd at 11 am. The participants will be welcomed by Prof ANNE BUTTIMER, President of the International Geographical Union (IGU), and Prof JAAK AAVIKSOO, Rector of the University of Tartu.

There will be four plenary sessions, to be introduced by local theme co-ordinators and continued by keynote speakers. The plenary oral presentation is expected to take 30-40 minutes, followed by questions and a discussion.

Simultaneous paper sessions will be held in groups. Every speaker will have ca 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions and discussion. We are looking forward to getting 30-40 papers. Our hosts, Tartu City Government and Tartu County Government are kindly inviting to participate in the reception on Friday, at 8 pm at the Tartu City Museum, Narva Street 23, and in the conference dinner on Saturday, 8 pm at the Restaurant Atlantis, Narva Street 2.

The final timetable and composition of the sessions will be included in the Conference information pack distributed to the participants in the registration desk and via web site.

PAPER SESSIONS FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

In order to attract young researchers enrolled in postgraduate programmes there will be two or three special paper sessions with a senior Chair and the discussants.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Posters (provided the audience is interested) will be put up at the beginning of the Conference in the Conference Hall premises and they will remain on display until the end of the Conference.

PUBLISHERS DISPLAY

There will be an opportunity for publishers to sell or exhibit their printed matter and booklets during the Conference.

POST-CONFERENCE

The conference is followed by the 20th session of the Permanent European Conference for the Study of the Rural Landscapes, August 26 - September 1, 2002, organised by the Institute of Geography (http://www.geo.ut.ee/PECSRL).
